Chief Justice Alexander Gesmundo: Judiciary s new leader – Manila Bulletin

Gesmundo became the 27 th head of the country’s Judiciary after being appointed by President Duterte last April 5.  He is expected to serve until midnight of Nov. 6, 2026, his 70 th birthday. Gesmundo assumed the post at the time the country is still reeling from the devastating effects of the dreaded coronavirus disease. The country has high expectations and hopes in Chief Justice Gesmundo’s leadership given his sterling record of 36 years in the public service.  A stickler for the rules, he is expected to steer the Judiciary to attain tremendous success in the people’s quest for justice, equality, due process, and respect for human rights.

Justice Alexander G. Gesmundo At the CEU, Chief Justice Gesmundo taught Civil Procedure and Practice Court. Gesmundo was appointed Chief Justice by President Duterte. His appointment papers were received by the Supreme Court (SC) last April 5 and he immediately assumed his post on the same day after taking his oath of office before SC Senior Associate Justice Estela M. Perlas Bernabe. He took over the post vacated last March 27 by the now retired Chief Justice Diosdado M. Peralta. It was also the President who appointed Gesmundo as SC associate justice on Aug. 14, 2017.  It was a promotion from his post as associate justice of the Sandiganbayan where he was appointed on Oct. 15, 2005.

Duterte named Alexander Gesmundo as 27th Chief Justice Panelo By VIRGIL LOPEZ, GMA News Published April 2, 2021 1:49pm President Rodrigo Duterte has appointed Supreme Court (SC) Associate Justice Alexander Gesmundo as Chief Justice, a Malacañang official said Friday. “Yes,” Chief Presidential Legal Counsel Salvador Panelo said in a text message when asked to confirm Gesmundo’s appointment. Panelo added that Gesmundo was Duterte’s “personal choice” to succeed Diosdado Peralta, who left the judiciary on March 27, one year ahead of his compulsory retirement. Duterte’s spokesperson Harry Roque neither confirmed nor denied Gesmundo s appointment. “As a matter of SOP (standard operating procedure), judicial appointments are confirmed by my office only after they have been received by the Supreme Court. Given the long holiday, the earliest a judicial appointment can be received by the Court would be this Monday (April 5),” Roque said.
