Lagos State Government has raised the alarm of a possible third wave of Coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic, following a sharp increase in the number of positive cases recorded in the last few weeks.
Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu, on Sunday, imposed restrictions and sanctions after disclosing that the Stateâs daily cases of COVID-19 confirmation had shot up to 6.6 per cent over a period of one week.
The development may not be unconnected to the careless attitude of air passengers from countries in the âhigh riskâ zones and the complacency by the residents to follow the protective protocols issued by the Government after the end of the second wave.
Nigerians should adhere to non-pharmaceutical measures to save lives
A few weeks after the warning against travelling to or returning from countries currently experiencing the third wave of the COVID-19 pandemic, the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control (NCDC) last week confirmed a case with the highly transmissible COVID-19 (SARS-CoV-2) Delta variant. Said to have been detected in an in-bound traveller following the usual routine check, the Indian strain has been linked to a surge in cases in countries where it is the dominant strain with ongoing studies to understand its impact on existing vaccines and therapeutics. This is another wake-up call for the country as we urge the authorities to do everything that will avert a Covid-19 disaster in Nigeria.

The Governor of Lagos State, Mr. Babajide Sanwo-Olu yesterday warned that the third wave of COVID-19 was imminent in the state, revealing that the state has started experiencing a potential third wave of the pandemic with dire consequences.
He said the state government would do everything possible to prevent a massive outbreak, threatening imprisonment of travellers who fail to release number through which they can be contacted.
“Starting around the end of March 2021, the second wave of the COVID19 pandemic in Lagos State began to wind down, and we began to enjoy some reprieve from the worst effects of the virus.
This comes as the Oyo State Government announced discovery of the malignant Delta variant of the virus in the state.
As of Sunday, Nigeria has recorded a total of 168, 540 confirmed cases of COVID-19, with 2,122 ; while 164, 431 patients had been discharged.
The Presidential Steering Committee (PSC) and relevant authorities had warned that the country could witness the third wave which neighbouring countries in the region and the rest of the globe had started experiencing.
The World Health Organisation (WHO) had earlier warned that Africa was facing a fast-surging third wave of COVID-19 pandemic. The organisation had warned that at the current rate of infections, the ongoing surge was set to surpass the previous one by early July.
