As WHO says it’s engaging G7, G20 to tackle vaccine equity By Joseph Erunke – Abuja The federal government has said a total of 8,439 cases of mild, adverse effects have occurred over the application of the AstraZeneca vaccine in the country. The cases, according to the government came out of over a million persons vaccinated with the AstraZeneca COVID-19 vaccines. The National Primary Healthcare Development Agency, NPHCDA, which disclosed this, explained further that 52 persons suffered moderate to severe adverse events at inoculation. Executive Director of NPHCDA, Dr Faisal Shuaib, speaking at a joint press conference with the World Health Organisation, WHO, on Friday in Abuja, said while the mild reactions included body pains nausea, and swelling, the moderate to severe adverse events presented were fever, vomiting, diarrhea headaches, dizziness, and allergic reactions.

The government through its healthcare agency, National Primary Health Care Development Agency (NPHCDA), disclosed this in Abuja. Speaking during a press conference, NPHCDA Executive Director, Faisal Shuaib, said those who reported severe side effects were less than 100, adding that there has been no record of death or blood clots associated with the distribution of the vaccine.

By Edwin Uhara FOLLOWING the successful transition of the Presidential Taskforce on COVID-19 to a Presidential Steering Committee on COVID-19, I have come across several reactions that trailed the development since the announcement was made by the Federal Government on Tuesday, April 6, 2021. While some hailed the move, others expressed reservations. But one that caught my attention most is the comment attributed to the Chairman, Senate Committee on Health, Senator Ibrahim Oloriegbe, who said: “I was listening to the radio yesterday (Wednesday last week) when I heard that the PTF on COVID-19 has been converted to a steering committee. We were not consulted in terms of what will be the operational mechanism and so on… What is the content of that conversion? How will the steering committee work?”
