The BSE Sensex surged 689.19 points, or 1.43 percent, to 48,782.51, while the Nifty50 climbed 209.90 points, or 1.48 percent, to 14,347.30 and formed a bullish candle on the daily as well as the weekly charts. It was up 2.35 percent during the week.

Nifty hits record high; realty stocks in demand

Benchmark indices were trading with strong gains in morning trade. The Nifty hit a record high of 14,289.30. All sectoral indices on the NSE were trading in the green. At 10:25 IST, the barometer index, the S&P BSE Sensex, surged 400.56 points or 0.83% at 48,493.13. The Nifty 50 index rallied 131.6 points or 0.93% at 14,268.70. Index major TCS was up 1.56%. It will announce its Q3 December 2020 result today. The broader market was trading firm. The S&P BSE Mid-Cap index was up 0.96% while the S&P BSE Small-Cap index gained 1.08%. The market breadth was strong. On the BSE, 1859 shares rose and 771 shares fell. A total of 138 shares were unchanged.

Barometers trade sideways; realty stocks in demand

Equity indices traded sideways with small gains in mid-morning trade. The Nifty hovered a tad below 14,200 mark. At 11:28 IST, the barometer index, the S&P BSE Sensex, was up 115.70 points or 0.24% at 48,289.66. The Nifty 50 index gained 43.85 points or 0.31% at 14,190.05. In the broader market, the S&P BSE Mid-Cap index was up 1.02% while the S&P BSE Small-Cap rallied 1.08%. Both indices outperformed the benchmark indices. The market breadth was strong. On the BSE, 1900 shares rose and 867 shares fell. A total of 149 shares were unchanged. COVID-19 Update: Total COVID-19 confirmed cases worldwide stood at 87,156,972 with 18,82,051 deaths. India reported 2,28,083 active cases of COVID-19 infection and 1,50,336 deaths while 1,00,16,859 patients have been discharged, according to the data from the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, Government of India.

December 23, 2020 / 04:35 PM IST Extending the gains into the second consecutive session, headline indices the Sensex and Nifty ended with healthy gains on December 23 amid mixed global cues. Market barometer Sensex witnessed mild volatility in the initial half-an-hour of the session but stabilised soon and traded in the green throughout the session. Continuing yesterday's momentum, the benchmarks rose by a percent supported by gains in shares of heavyweights, led by IT and FMCG. The 30-share pack closed 437 points, or 0.95 percent, higher at 46,444.18 and Nifty settled 135 points, or 1 percent, higher at 13,601.10.
