DRIFTLESS - Over the past week COVID-19, diagnoses statewide increased from 438,895 on Monday, Dec. 14 to 458,612 on Monday, Dec. 21. That is a statewide increase of 19,717 cases. The number of deaths increased from 4,068 to 4,425, an additional 357 deaths, according to the Wisconsin Department of Health Services.

DOC converting Prairie du Chien prison to minimum security
PRAIRIE DU CHIEN - The Wisconsin Department of Corrections (DOC) is converting Prairie du Chien Correctional Institution (PDCI) from a medium-security to minimum-security institution.
The move aligns with the DOC’s priority of expanding opportunities in evidence-based community programs, while also lowering the number of individuals on the DOC’s wait list to get into a minimum-security facility.
Roughly 75 percent of the 500 currently incarcerated at PDCI are already classified as minimum custody. Converting PDCI to a minimum-security facility will require moving individuals at PDCI classified as medium custody to other medium-security institutions, and moving in individuals classified as minimum custody who are currently housed in medium-security institutions. Prairie du Chien Correctional Institution to become minimum-security prison

MADISON, Wis. The state Department of Corrections announced it will convert Prairie du Chien Correctional Institution from a medium-security to minimum-security institution.
A news release Wednesday said the change will lower the number of people on the DOC’s wait list to get into a minimum-security facility.
Although roughly three-quarters of PDCI’s 500 inmates are already classified as minimum custody, the other 25% of inmates will need to move to other institutions.
More inmates at the Crawford County prison will have the opportunity to participate in work release programs, which have been suspended due to the pandemic.

The number of deaths increased from 3,758 to 4,068, an additional 330 deaths, according to the Wisconsin Department of Health Services.

On Friday, December 11, LaCrosse County Public Health Director Jennifer Rombalski, and Dr. Naik of Gundersen Health Systems and Dr. Morcomb of Mayo Health Systems, made a presentation about what citizens should know about and expect with upcoming vaccinations for COVID-19.
“The coming of the vaccine and improvement in our county’s metrics are both welcome news,” Rombalski said. “However, everyone needs to know that getting people vaccinated is going to take time, and things may very well get worse before they get better.
