Vaccine rollout: Lack of trust, resources of concern in rural areas | News, Sports, Jobs

mmcilwain@sungazette.com A lack of trust among rural Pennsylvanians and a lack of vaccine resources were the main topics of a virtual hearing Wednesday morning on the COVID-19 vaccine rollout. Organized by the Center for Rural Pennsylvania, participants included state Sen. Gene Yaw, R-Loyalsock Township, center chairman; state Secretary of Health Dr. Rachel Levine; Steven Johnson, president and CEO of UPMC Susquehanna; Dr. George Garrow, chief medical officer, Primary Health Network in Sharon; and Dr. Cary Funk, director of science and society research at the Pew Research Center. Trust in science is low in the rural areas of the state with 25 percent of people in the Williamsport area and 30 percent in Lock Haven not willing to learn about or receive the COVID-19 vaccine, according to Johnson.

Ten new general practices join the Health Care Home programme

They will join the 115,000 patients and 14 practices already in Health Care Home. Aurora Health Centre in Dunedin and Central Medical Oamaru, along with the Invercargill practices Catherine Street Medical Centre, He Puna Waiora Wellness Centre, and South City Medical Centre, started the programme in November. A further five practices – Dunedin North Medical Centre, Dunedin South Medical Centre, Dunedin Health Centre (formerly Caversham) Mosgiel Health Centre, and Fiordland Medical Practice – will begin in March.
