On the 100th anniversary of Rotary International’s birth in Africa this year, a “Peace Centre” in Africa, the first of its kind, has been set up at Makerere University.
The centre will largely train “Peace Fellows” in promoting peace the world over. Conflict, violence, or persecutions escalate the refugee crisis, displacing about 79.5 million people around the world, according to the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees.
In fact 40 percent of refugees are children, while 85 percent of the refugee population is found in developing countries, more-so Africa. It is against that background that Rotary has set up the eighth Peace Centre in the world, based at Makerere University. Rotary intends to inject US$12 million.

While the other Senior Six candidates were busy in the school library revising, Julius Kwizera, 21, a blind student at Hornby High School in Kabale District cut a lonely figure seated in one of the classrooms revising using his braille machine and papers.
Kwizera has been blind since he was two years old. Being too young at the time to remember the circumstances under which he lost his eyesight, his parents have told him that he was affected by a trachoma infection.

April 21, 2021 Victorious preparatory school in Kabale
Victorious Preparatory school in Kabale district, western Uganda is under fire from education authorities over detaining two primary seven students over unpaid fees.
The school director Julius Arineitwe, headteacher Justus Bataringaya and administrator Godfrey Asasire allegedly detained Swaleh Junior Mayanja, 13, and Swahaba Selemba, 11, - both sons of Swaleh Mayanja after the completion of their Primary Leaving Examinations (PLE) last month on March 31 over alleged failure to clear third term tuition amounting to Shs 1.64 million.
Flavia Ineema Nansubuga, an auntie of the two candidates, says that her brother Mayanja tasked her to take care of her nephews since he couldn’t travel with them to Rwanda, where he works because of the COVID-19 restrictions.
