MYSURU: The family-run establishment, which is set to turn 100 this year, counts among its patrons, among other prominent personalities, former Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee, who dined here in 1983. The eatery traces its origins back to 1920, when the founder C Venkataraman Iyer, who came to Kollegal after completing his stint as a supervisor at the Krishnaraja Sagar Dam site. Initially christened ‘Ramananda Coffee Club’, the eatery acquired its current name when Venkataram’s son V Venkata Subramanyam took over the reins of the establishment on his father’s death in 1947. “Venkata Subramanyam was fondly called Subbu, and since he was running the hotel, it became known among the people as Subbu Hotel,” recalled 67-year-old V Nagarajan, Venkata Subramanyam’s son, who is currently running the family enterprise. In its very name ‘Shri Subbu Hotel’, the eatery pays homage to the man who made the eatery a local landmark.
