Police said the area remains unstable for now and can only be accessed by helicopter.
Some 40 ambulances were sent to the scene and there was a risk of more landslides as masses of earth were still moving, Toril Hofshagen from the Norwegian Water Resources and Energy Directorate said.
She added the slip was one of the largest slides in recent Norwegian history.
The clay soil in the area may have shifted due to the recent high levels of precipitation, broadcaster NRK reported.
Kjetil Aamann - who lives 164ft from the edge of the landslide - told TV2 he was woken by the sound of a helicopter overhead shortly after 4am, before police called to tell him to evacuate.
Some 200 people have been evacuated on Wednesday amid fears of further landslides.
Norwegian police were alerted at 4am (03:00 GMT) to the slip in the village of Ask, in the municipality of Gjerdrum, some 20km (12 miles) north of Oslo.
Photos of the area showed at least eight homes destroyed. Some 40 ambulances were sent to the scene and evacuation was ongoing as officials said there was a risk of further landslides.
Police spokesman Roger Pettersen told Norwegian public broadcaster NRK that there were no reports of missing people, but officials could not rule out the possibility of people still in collapsed buildings.
