Mehul Choksi, the fugitive diamantaire and uncle of Nirav Modi, has disappeared mysteriously from Antigua where he had sought refuge in January 2018 after being accused of defrauding Punjab National Bank of close to Rs 5,000 crore through fake credit instruments.
Choksi, the 62-year-old former chairperson and MD of Gitanjali Gems, went missing on Sunday from the Caribbean island where he had obtained citizenship of Antigua and Barbuda in November 2017 using the Citizenship by Investment programme possibly in anticipation of his flight from justice.

Fugitive businessman Mehul Choksi, wanted in a Rs 13,500 crore loan fraud in Punjab National Bank, has gone missing in Antigua and Barbuda where he has been staying since January 2018, his lawyer and the Royal Police Force of the Caribbean island nation said.
The country s Prime Minister Gaston Browne has said he has no reliable information till date that Mr Choksi has fled the country and it was very likely that he was still in Antigua and Barbuda.
In a statement to the Parliament of Antigua and Barbuda, Mr Browne said authorities were collaborating with the Indian government, neighbouring countries and international police organisation to try and locate Mr Choksi.

Geneva – The Antigua and Barbuda government appealed on Monday for the World Health Assembly (WHA) to commit to an urgent and binding implementation plan in order to “arrest the tragedies” of the COVID-19 pandemic that has killed millions of people and infected several more millions worldwide since 2019.
In a recorded address to the 74th WHA, taking place virtually, Prime Minister Gaston Browne said the organisation must also agree to comprehensive and decisive action in dealing with the pandemic that has killed 42 people and infected 1,257 in his homeland.
Browne told the WHA that if action is not taken, “our one world will be injured irreparably with profound repercussions for all”.

The Leader of the United Progressive Party (UPP) has spoken out against the recent attempts by the government to “bribe” residents to get vaccinated, and has called them ineffective.
Harold Lovell addressed the matter at the UPP’s Virtual Meeting on Thursday and echoed similar comments hours later on Observer radio.
He said that bribing persons who are already quite skeptical about getting the jab does not make sense and has suggested intensive educational campaigns as the way forward in order to mitigate the dilemma.
Lovell said people need to be armed with as much information as possible to be able to make informed choices.
