Professor Sir Hilary Beckles, Statement
The UWI Regional Headquarters, Jamaica. Wednesday, April 21, 2021 The following statement is issued by the Vice-Chancellor of The UWI, Professor Sir Hilary Beckles.
As The University of the West Indies (The UWI) stands in active solidarity with the people of Saint Vincent and the Grenadines, urging them to remain defiant in the fury of La Soufrière, it also continues to reach out to Prime Minister of the Republic of Trinidad and Tobago, Dr Keith Rowley as he battles with that other subversive force of nature, COVID-19.

Show empathy for PM Rowley
Prime Minister Dr Rowley - Vidya Thurab
THE EDITOR: According to Norbert Juma, empathy can be defined as the capacity to understand and share the feelings of others. It is the ability to be aware of other people’s emotions, experiences and perspectives.
Empathy is one of the most important skills you can practise in life. It is crucial for our personal development, relationships and society as a whole. We need empathy in order to form harmonious relationships, minimise stress and enhance emotional intelligence.
I found it necessary to share these thoughts on empathy due to the negative comments being made toward Prime Minister Dr Rowley and the unfortunate situation he and his family are currently navigating. I was appalled and saddened that some people would have such hate and negativity toward our leader or another human being.
Time to lift restrictions on the bars
Prime Minister Dr Rowley - OFFICE OF THE PRIME MINISTER
THE EDITOR: I refer to a recent announcement by Angostura that their profits from the sale of alcohol increased significantly in 2020. People drank more alcohol in 2020 than ever before. So what was achieved by closing bars and forcing many out of business or pushing them close to bankruptcy?
The dangers of alcohol consumption are well documented. Ironically, closing bars led to increased consumption, and hence more damage from it, not less.
It might have prevented the spread of covid19, you say. By that I take it you mean we might have had more positive tests from a very flawed PCR test. Perhaps, but that s hardly important.
