Britain has made the month of May this year particularly important in political and electoral terms. Thanks to a combination of public health challenges, and political party changes, local and regional elections assume greater than usual importance.
In the elections just held, including English local councils and regional assemblies in Scotland and Wales, the Conservative Party emerged as the overall winner in national terms. Some media and political analysts focus on this point, but actually, the election results are complex, with other parties making gains.
The nationâs Conservative government postponed local government elections scheduled for May 2020 because of the COVID-19 pandemic. Britain, rightly known and respected for the rule of law, also has considerably broader scope than some other nations â including the United States â in addressing crises.

Democracies have an inbuilt flaw when their own processes can be employed to undermine them. It is what has happened in Hungary in the last decade, and Hungary is not alone.
In his youth the current prime minister of Hungary, Viktor Orban, was an ardent dissident leading a youth movement, Fidesz, and in 1989 he was calling for the removal of Soviet troops and free democratic elections. Opposition to single-party socialist rule was eventually successful, and he was elected a Fidesz member of the National Assembly in 1990.
In 1998, his party won a plurality, and he served his first term as prime minister until 2002 when the socialists returned to power. However, a landslide victory in 2010 gave Orban a two-thirds supermajority, and with it the power to amend constitutional laws.
Tobias Powell supported a far-right terrorist group from his home in Sussex. The unemployed 32-year-old admitted four counts of using threatening, abusive, or insulting words or behaviour intending to incite racial hatred. In his social media posts he called for civil war to stop the “ethnic suicide of white people” and boasted about “white power”. He shared a picture of his Nazi tattoo and shared an image of his dog who he claimed he was training to do a Nazi salute. At Portsmouth Crown Court he was jailed for three years. Powell, of Wythering Close, Selsey, had “toxic” views, the court heard.
