ROME â The Italian prime minister resigned on Tuesday and triggered the collapse of the government.

Italy’s prime minister resigns amid pandemic criticism, in attempt to build new majority Muri Assunção
Italian Prime Minister Giuseppe Conte resigned on Tuesday, amid differences within the governing alliance over the country’s post-pandemic economic future.
Conte has been widely criticized for his handling of the COVID-19 crisis, which has infected nearly 2.5 million and killed more than 85,000 people in Italy. He stepped down on Tuesday after a meeting with his cabinet.
“At 9 am Giuseppe Conte presided over the last Council of Ministers of his second government, thanked the heads of the various departments for their work and announced to the team that he would resign,” the Italian newspaper Corriere della Sera reported.

Jan. 26 (UPI) Italian Prime Minister Giuseppe Conte stepped down on Tuesday, as expected, largely over criticism for his handling of the COVID-19 pandemic.
Conte had been mired in scrutiny for months over his economic plan and how his government responded to the health crisis. Significant opposition led to a fractured governing coalition.

Conte submitted his resignation Tuesday to Italian President Sergio Mattarella after a high-level meeting of administration officials.

Rome As the coronavirus pandemic death toll soars globally, the latest victim is the Italian government. On Tuesday, Prime Minister Giuseppe Conte resigned, sparking a political crisis while the country is deep in the throes of its COVID-19 epidemic.
Conte s center-left coalition government started to wobble last week when former Prime Minister Matteo Renzi pulled the support of his splinter party, denying Conte an absolute governing majority. Renzi had chastised Conte over his handling of the health crisis and the economic recovery plan.
