About 16,000 people ordered to evacuate in St Vincent amid fears La Soufriere volcano will EXPLODE any minute (VIDEO, PHOTO)

Follow RT on The government of the Caribbean island of St. Vincent has ordered a mass evacuation of the area close to an active volcano, with seismologists saying that an explosive eruption could start “with very little warning.” Some 16,000 people living in the vicinity of La Soufriere volcano in the so-called “red zone” will be evacuated, either to safer parts of the island or to a cruise ship, the authorities announced on Thursday. While the volcano has shown seismic activity since December 2020, in the past few days it has gone up a notch, prompting fears of an imminent and potentially devastating full-blown eruption.

CARICOM has mobilised and stands ready to assist St Vincent

The Caribbean Community (CARICOM) has mobilised and stands ready to offer support to St Vincent and the Grenadines as it faces the imminent eruption of the La Soufriere Volcano. After Prime Minister Ralph Gonsalves issued an evacuation order for those living in the red zone, several neighbouring countries have offered to house displaced Vincentians. Among them are Antigua and Barbuda and Anguilla. In a statement issued late on Thursday, CARICOM said the scientific team from the University of the West Indies (UWI) Seismic Research Centre (SRC) has been in St Vincent constantly monitoring the volcano and rendering scientific advice to the Government.
