During their campaigns they played upon the fears and distrust of their voters, portraying liberal politicians as elite, corrupt and out of touch with their constituents, claiming often untruthfully, that their countries were dying, crime-filled, wastelands, that the future of the citizenry was in danger; and that only by electing a hand-line authoritarian such as themselves could the citizens once more inhabit a country in which they would be safe and corruption would end.
