SHARE: New York City voters’ first major tryout of ranked-choice voting may be over, but now the work of tallying votes – including absentee ballots still yet to be returned – begins. As of late Tuesday night, few of the more than 300 candidates in three dozen open City Council districts were decisively declaring victory or conceding defeat. While Council Members Carlina Rivera, Rafael Salamanca Jr. and Farah Louis were a few of the Democrats to face primaries as incumbents, those challenges weren’t particularly competitive and each of the incumbents swon easy victories. And a few new City Council candidates also won, with Democrat Jennifer Gutierrez and Republican Joann Ariola, who The New York Times declared as the winners in the 34th and 32nd Council Districts, respectively.

CUNY Faculty Union Resolution Accusing Israel of Massacre of Palestinians Passes by Wide Margin

A resolution passed by the City University of New York faculty union labelled Israel an “apartheid … settler colonial state” that has perpetrated the “massacre” of Palestinians, and demanded the Biden administrate cease US aid to Israel. The resolution was approved by the public university system’s Professional Staff Congress union (PSC-CUNY) on Thursday, by an 84-34 margin. The resolution said that “Israel’s pattern of practice of dispossession and expansion of settlements dating back to its establishment as a settler colonial state in 1948 has been found to be illegal under international law,” and demanded that US President Biden “stop all aid funding human rights violations and occupation that is illegal under international law.”
