Finally, there is a breakthrough in Phoenix’s fierce fight for independent oversight of police misconduct. The Phoenix City Council on Wednesday is poised to approve an ordinance to set up the Office of Accountability and Transparency that was shelved months ago. There is solid support for it now that progressives control the council, but we should still expect some fireworks from Republican firebrand and police-can-no-wrong promoter Sal DiCiccio and Jim Waring, who’d rather hire more cops. Believe it or not, it’s taken decades to get to this point. Last November, Councilman Carlos García almost got it done, but then outgoing councilman Michael Nowakowski threw a wrench when he cast the deciding vote against it.

Columbus police chief: Finalists resumes, priorities, applications

The four finalists to be the next Columbus police chief  Elaine Bryant, Derrick Diggs, Avery Moore and Ivonne Roman  will answer questions from the public during a 90-minute forum Wednesday. The forum, which begins at 6 p.m., will be livestreamed on the city s YouTube and Facebook pages, as well as broadcast on CTV.  For the first time in the city s history, Columbus will hire from outside the city to lead the Division of Police. Questions can be submitted in advance of the community forum by emailing policechiefsearch@columbus.gov. The Dispatch reached out to all four finalists. Bryant is the only one who responded and spoke with The Dispatch, though the newspaper interviewed people familiar with most of the candidates.

Long Beach Police arrest Los Angeles Police Department officer for possession and distribution of child pornography

The Long Beach Police Department has made an arrest of a police officer currently employed with the Los Angeles Police Department and booked for charges related to child sexual abuse material. In October of 2020, detectives from the Long Beach Police Department’s Internet Crimes Against Children Taskforce received a CyberTip from the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children regarding possible online distribution or sharing of child sexual abuse material. During their investigation, detectives gathered sufficient information to identify the suspect and develop probable cause for an arrest. Detectives identified the suspect responsible for these alleged crimes as 52-year-old James Diamond. On Wednesday morning, May 5, 2021, Diamond was taken into custody in the City of Huntington Beach as he was outside of a business on the on the 5000 block of Bolsa Avenue. LONG BEACH, Calif.  An officer with the Los Angeles Police Department was arrested Wednesday on suspicion of possessing child pornography, authorities said. Police in the city of Long Beach began investigating James Diamond after receiving a tip from the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children, according to a police statement. Diamond, 52, was taken into custody outside a business in the city of Huntington Beach, the statement said. It wasn’t immediately known if he has an attorney. Detectives served search warrants at Diamond’s home in Long Beach and his workplace in Los Angeles, police said. Advertisement Diamond could face felony charges including possession of child pornography and distribution of obscene matter depicting a minor.
