ALPENA The Besser Museum for Northeast Michigan is kicking off 2021 with a celebration of “New Beginnings.”
This year’s non-juried art exhibit will abandon the “Winter Blues” theme which restricted artists to working with only blue hues for their art entry. This year, the museum is encouraging artists to use any or all the colors in the spectrum.
Also new are the works of local award-winning photographer, Lori Keskimaki. Keskimaki specializes in photographing newborns in their first few days of life.
ALVORDâThe image is called âJust More Bad News,â but hearing her photo was selected to compete for the 2021 World Photographic Cup is some of the best news Dana Rose has heard all year.
The 39-year-old Alvord woman is one of 18 artists representing the United States in the annual international photo competition, which concludes in April. Her image of a grumpy bird reading a newspaper was selected out of more than 5,000 images submitted by professional photographers across the nation.
The good news does not stop there, either. Rose also has five images included on top 10 lists in several categories of the International Photographic Competition, a companion to the World Photographic Cup.

Paris porcelain is often a mystery to collectors. Sometimes it is sold as Vieux Paris or Old Paris. It was made in the 18th or early 19th century. Most pieces are not marked, but the porcelain is very white and the decorations are usually elaborate with many colors and gold trim. It was made by several different Paris potteries.
A 19th-century cylindrical Paris porcelain vase decorated on the front with a painting of Cupid and Psyche sold for $244 at a Neal auction recently. There was standing putto on the back, and the vase had a blue base with gold shaped trim. Other pieces of Paris porcelain at the same auction were appraised at $600 or more.
