Hometown heroes: Belton native named parade grand marshal

BELTON — Following a year of difficulties, the Belton Fourth of July Parade this year will have a theme of hometown heroes to celebrate those who give back within the community. To helm the parade, organizers have chosen Roscoe Harrison, a Belton native and current pastor at the Eighth Street Baptist Church in Temple, to be its grand marshal this year. This year marks the return of the parade, according to the Belton Area Chamber of Commerce, which organizes the parade, following last year’s virtual event caused by the pandemic. Randy Pittenger, president and chief executive officer of the chamber, said the parade usually celebrates veterans and first responders but felt this year it was important to celebrate other heroes.

Fireworks at Fort Hood and Copperas Cove set for weekend events

Fireworks, festivities and fun during the Fourth of July weekend include Fort Hood’s annual celebration, a fireworks display in Copperas Cove and the return of a parade in Belton. Fort Hood has scheduled its Independence Day celebration to be held from 4 to 10 p.m. on July 2 this year. Fort Hood’s Family and Morale, Welfare and Recreation and the USO will host Independence Day festivities on July 2 including a concert and fireworks celebration. There will not be fireworks on July 4; all Fort Hood Independence Day activities, including fireworks, are scheduled for July 2. Entertainment sponsored by the USO include LOCASH, DJ J. Dayz, Taylor Williamson and Miss America Camille Schrier.
