Some of the greatest legacies and moments in history were born out of extremely trying and challenging times.
There is Nelson Mandela’s struggle and imprisonment in order to wrestle apartheid in South Africa to the ground. In the United States, there are the likes of Harriet Tubman, Dr Martin Luther King Jr, Malcolm X and John Lewis who fought tirelessly for human rights. Here in the Caribbean, the name Marcus Garvey will forever be etched in the annals of history’s struggle against oppression.
The most valuable lessons learnt from all of these greats is the ability to rise in the midst of a disastrous situation, charting a course for good and leaving a legacy that can be talked about and admired for decades and centuries after.
Barbados has wiped out its multimillion-dollar debt owed to the University of The West Indies (UWI) Cave Hill campus. This was disclosed on Monday by UWI vice chancellor Professor Sir Hilary Beckles, who said the Barbados Government had managed to pay off the last $50 million of the debt which principal of the Cave Hill Campus Professor The Most Honourable Eudine Barriteau said in 2017 was “close to $200 million”. …

Cedella Marley is beaming bout her impending American Foundation for The University of the West Indies’ (AFUWI) Chancellor’s Award for Excellence in Global Leadership, which will be presented to her on Sunday, February 21 at the organization’s Annual Awards Gala.
“I believe that higher education provides a pathway for progress & prosperity, which is why I’m honored to be receiving the Chancellor’s Award for Excellence in Global Leadership at @afuwi’s Scholarship Fundraising Gala,” she posted on Instagram on Tuesday.
The 53-year-old who is the firstborn of Bob Marley and his wife Rita, is an accomplished singer, author, fashion designer and philanthropist.
Academics give back to students in need

The University of the West Indies’ 2020 Global Giving Campaign continues to receive generous contributions of alumni, donors and corporate partners regionally and internationally.
Although the campaign was officially targeted as a month-long drive last August, in the latest act of kindness, UWI alumna, Professor Pauline O. Lawrence and her husband Professor Carlton G. Davis, both Jamaican-born, have stepped up to establish a scholarship fund with US$100,000 to provide scholarships to current and future UWI students in need.
