Ten of thousands of Sydneysiders have gridlocked roads out of the city on Good Friday for the Easter long weekend - sparking fears undetected Covid cases could be spread across the state.  Restrictions are in place for Byron Bay and surrounding areas - one of the most popular holiday spots in the state - after a series of cases were linked to a hen s party at a pub in the north coast town. On Friday, hundreds of cars were filmed bumper to bumper choking the M1 Motorway north from Sydney as holidaymakers left for long weekend getaways.  The M1 out of Sydney on Friday afternoon was bumper to bumper for 40km as tens of thousands of holidaymakers head away for the Easter weekend (pictured)

The great unknown: do Covid vaccines stop you spreading the virus?

Last modified on Fri 26 Feb 2021 14.02 EST As Australia joins the worldwide Covid-19 vaccine rollout, researchers keep emphasising that while we know the various vaccines in use are strong at preventing hospitalisation and severe disease, it’s less clear how well they stop the virus spreading to other people. While the term ‘Covid-19’ is often used interchangeably to describe both the virus and the disease, it is important to understand the distinction between the two. The virus is Sars-CoV-2, while the disease that can cause symptoms such as coughing and fever is Covid-19. We know vaccinated people are protected in 63-95% of cases from developing Covid-19 and its symptoms, depending on the vaccine. All of the vaccines being rolled out are similarly highly effective at stopping severe disease.

Reprieve for Victorians with five-day lockdown to end on time

Health by Tom Minear, James Campbell, Alanah Frost, Alex White 17th Feb 2021 5:22 AM Premium Content   Victoria will snap back out of its five-day lockdown at 11.59pm Wednesday, with crowds to return to the Australian Open, unless positive cases surge on Wednesday morning. The Herald Sun can reveal senior Andrews government ministers met on Tuesday evening to finalise plans to end the lockdown on Thursday, barring any mystery cases emerging overnight. The ministers will meet again at 8am on Wednesday, when they are expected to rubberstamp the plan to reopen the state. The Herald Sun understands this will involve a return to restrictions similar to the regime in place pre-lockdown, but with masks still required indoors and some slightly tougher rules including limits on household gatherings.
