Politicians divided on return of international students Six months ago, University World News published my article, “Could Australia be the student mobility comeback kid?”, where I gave a very upbeat assessment of the prospects for Australia’s inbound international student recruitment. But the only way you can be a comeback kid is to get off the canvas when you’ve been knocked to the floor. At the moment, Australia is looking like it is down and out for the full count. There were warning signs as far back as April 2020, when Prime Minister Scott Morrison told a press conference: “If they [international students] are not in a position to support themselves, then there is the alternative for them to return to their home countries.”

Many of these findings have been in the scientific and medical literature for a decade or more and have been dismissed by industry and disregarded by governments supposedly responsible for the health of communities. Indeed for the past decade, evidence that has been presented to numerous parliamentary committees and their recommendations has been deliberately ignored.
