Don’t get caught in pyroclastic flow, professor cautions PROFESSOR RICHARD ROBERTSON La Soufrière has operated remarkably in the way in which it erupted this time around. The head of the Soufriere monitoring team Vincentian geologist/ volcanologist, Professor Richard Robertson, disclosed this while speaking to Prime Minister Dr Ralph Gonsalves on NBC radio on Wednesday, April 14. “The volcano in this eruption has operated in a remarkable way. Yes, it’s doing a bad thing in the fact that it’s causing damage, but the way in which it has built up, in terms of played out its eruption, has provided so much warning that it’s unusual,” the volcanologist indicated.

Social Share Port Of Spain – Caribbean Community (CARICOM) leaders Thursday pledged their ongoing commitment to help St Vincent and the Grenadines deal with the impact of an erupting La Soufriere volcano that has so far resulted in the evacuation of thousands of residents on the Caribbean island. A statement issued after the regional leaders met virtually under the chairmanship of Trinidad and Tobago Prime Minister Dr Keith Rowley, noted that the special emergency meeting “committed to continue providing extensive support to St Vincent and the Grenadines and pledged solidarity with that member state as it strove to cope with the disaster”.

A brief bulletin posted on the Centre’s Facebook Page noted that the eruption occurred at 6:15 a.m. La Soufriere has been erupting explosively since last Friday. Lead scientist monitoring the volcano Professor Richard Robertson has said that explosive eruptions of La Soufriere can be expected for up to a year.
