Klang Valley sees drop in cases

Factors to consider when reopening more businesses

PETALING JAYA: Rapid testing and biosafety preparedness are keys in allowing non-critical economic sectors to gradually reopen, say health and economy experts. Universiti Malaya professor of epidemiology and public health Prof Dr Sanjay Rampal said while the target of vaccinating 10% of the nation’s population or 3.2 million people by mid-July was achievable, the reopening of more business sectors would depend on the number of daily infections and strain on the healthcare system. “A key determinant on whether we should relax the movement restriction will be based on the Health Ministry situational analysis of the healthcare capacity. “A total lockdown has very high psychological, social and economic cost. It should only be continued if our healthcare system is overstrained, ” he said yesterday.

Experts: Fear leads to overcrowding at PPV centres

KUALA LUMPUR: The high number of people turning up at vaccine dispensing centres (PPV) to “try their luck” boils down to a fear of missing out on the vaccination amid their anxiety over the rising number of Covid-19 cases, say public health experts. “This is real in many places, ” said Malaysian Public Health Physicians Association president Datuk Dr Zainal Ariffin Omar (pic), referring to the large crowds at the four centres in the Klang Valley. He also spoke about a sense of distrust in authorities among some people. For example, he said that these people tend to listen to rumours and would thus bank on any window of opportunity, “even the smallest one”.

Keep masking up, Malaysia

PETALING JAYA: Masks are still a must for Malaysians as the festive season continues and the country battles an onslaught of Covid-19 cases, say health authorities and experts. Their advice comes at the heels of the latest guidance by the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), which said that fully vaccinated individuals in the United States need not wear masks when they are outdoors. A person is considered “fully vaccinated” two weeks after they have received their second dose. However, Malaysia’s Health director-general Tan Sri Dr Noor Hisham Abdullah maintained that for now, masks still need to be worn.
