RE: SYLVA, ADDAX LICENCE AND FAIRY TALES

I am one of those that strongly condemned the action of the minister of state for Petroleum resources, Timipre Sylva on grounds stated below. One, the minister cannot arbitrarily revoke or renew an Oil Prospecting or Mining License OPL/OML. Two, the minister does not have discretionary power to award or allocate a revoked OPL/OML3.The minister should put the interest of the nation first above the interest of any individual or company. Marginal fields allocation list approved by the President is questionable. The contractor/operator signed a Joint Venture (JV) or Production Sharing Contract (PSC) agreement with NNPC not DPR. DPR can only revoke or renew a JV or PSC agreement on recommendation from NNPC. This process was neglected by the minister. If for the above reason the license is revoked, the Blocks OPL/OML shall go for competitive bidding to determine its true value. It’s economic sabotage to assign a block free without competitive bids especially Oil and Gas Producing Block.

How NNPC tackled DPR, pushed Buhari to return revoked oilfields to Addax

How NNPC tackled DPR, pushed Buhari to return revoked oilfields to Addax The clash is another example of how government agencies appear to work at cross purposes and succeed in having the president do their bidding. Days before the restoration of four oil mining licenses to Addax Petroleum, the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC) launched a blistering tackle on its sister agency, Department of Petroleum Resources, with a strong appeal to President Muhammadu Buhari to reverse DPR’s revocation of the OMLs and reject a reallocation to another company. The NNPC in a letter to the president on April 20 argued that the revocation of the oilfields would have implications on the Nigerian economy and the diplomatic relationship between Nigeria and China. Addax is owned by Sinopec, a state-owned Chinese firm, the nine-page memo seen PREMIUM TIMES shows.

Addax: How Buhari Reinforced Sino-Nigerian Partnership

Olu Tayo In today’s borderless world, there are considerable international interactions at various levels. The difference in the value systems and diversity makes ethics in international relations imperative. Ethics works by granting and withdrawing legitimacy. History shows that the mitigation and cessation of unjust practices ultimately comes from the assertion of core values. The end of slavery began with various revolutions and rebellions – yet the source of its ultimate demise was its loss of moral legitimacy. Ditto for communism: the Soviet Union collapsed when the values that held it together were no longer credible and sustainable. Its legitimacy evaporated.
