The government can make history by initiating reforms leading to a fairer platform economy in Pakistan
The last decade saw a massive growth in the platform economy. According to a 2021 ILO report, online web-based platforms have tripled and taxi and delivery platforms have grown almost ten-fold. Fair-work Foundation estimates the size of the world’s gig economy to be between 14 and 55 million workers, with the upper number increasing to 440 million workers, when country-specific estimates are considered.
The gig economy or platform economy is a combination of online/digital marketplaces engaging individuals for short-term tasks, and also referred to as digital labour platforms. The platform economy has two major forms of work: crowd work and work on demand via apps. Crowd work is performed online and is location-independent. It consists of software development, data entry and translation services among others.
IN a step that will go far in sending a message of reassurance to female students and academic staff in universities, the KP ombudsperson for protection against the harassment of women recommended the removal of a senior professor at Islamia College University in Peshawar for inappropriate behaviour towards a women student. The student had approached the ombudsperson last November with a complaint against the chairman of the political science department. After an inquiry conducted into the matter, the ombudsperson’s office recommended that the professor be removed from his post under Section 4(II)(c) of Protection Against Harassment of Women at Workplace Act, 2010. The order also recommended additional penalties under Section 10-2(h) to be decided on by the relevant authority. Considering how pervasive harassment is on campuses and how university authorities tend to ignore or dismiss such allegations as was seen in this case initially the decision comes as a breath of fresh air

PESHAWAR: The participants of an inter-provincial dialogue have stressed the need for bridging the gap between civil society and government for bringing democratic and human rights reforms in the country.
They said that human rights formed the foundation for democracy and a strong democracy guaranteed the protection and safety of human rights in society.
The speakers said the main challenge in this regard is weak engagement. The political support is vital to stop the violation of human rights.
The dialogue titled ‘Inter-Provincial Exchange: Democratic and Human Rights Reforms in Pakistan’ was organised by Democracy Reporting International (DRI).
It was attended by lawmakers, rights activists and development experts from all the four provinces of the country besides foreign diplomats. Pakistani singer Meesha Shafi could face up to three years in jail time if she loses the defamation case filed by actor-singer Ali Zafar.
The case, which stems from a sexual misconduct claim that reportedly occurred nearly three years ago, was pivotal in sparking the #MeToo movement in Pakistan. The Federal Investigation Agency (FIA) cybercrime wing in Pakistan booked Shafi and eight others for their alleged involvement in a smear campaign against Zafar in September last year.
Last week, a judicial magistrate summoned Shafi and another person in a criminal case that has been registered under the cybercrime law following a complaint by Zafar. While the hearing has been adjourned until March 27, the First Information Report that has been filed under section 20 of the Pakistan Electronic Crime Act and section 109 of Pakistan Penal Code for allegedly for running a smear campaign against the complainant on social media, which carries a jail term of up to three years.
