The Morrison Government today, 6 May 2021, has announced a 30% tax offset for video game development.
The announcement comes as part of this year’s Federal Budget, aiming to invest in Australia’s digital economy.
The 30% refundable tax offset will be eligible for businesses that spend a minimum of $500,000 on qualifying Australian games expenditure. The Government will consult with the industry mid-2021 to define the criteria of expenditure.
The Interactive Games & Entertainment Association (IGEA) has responded to the proposed changes, welcoming Australia’s first federal tax incentive for video game development.

Australia and Saudi Arabia Resume Livestock Trade After 10 Year Hiatus
A ten-year hiatus on livestock trade between Australia and Saudi Arabia has been broken with the Middle East kingdom now welcoming Australian exports again.
Agriculture Minister David Littleproud said on April 7 that Australia has been working with the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia (KSA) on the arrangements.
“My department has been working closely with their counterparts in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia to ensure that these new arrangements meet Saudi Arabia’s requirements and ensure the health and welfare of the exported animals,” Littleproud said.
The Australian Livestock Exporters’ Council (ALEC) thanked Littleproud for securing the opportunity for the country’s livestock producers.
The Morrison Government will extend two measures to support the local screen content as it recovers from the COVID-19 pandemic.
The $50 million Temporary Interruption Fund (TIF) will be extended for a further six months, to provide coverage for productions that commence principal photography prior to 31 December 2021.
“Despite our successes in managing COVID-19 in Australia, the continuing severity of the pandemic internationally is a problem for screen production, with insurers still not providing coverage for COVID-19 related events,” Minister Fletcher said.
“TIF has been vital in providing the certainty that productions need to secure financing, and it will have assisted with more than 12,000 production roles and 5000 business contracts in its first year of operation.”
