Release jailed dissident on medical grounds, UN experts urge Iran May 04, 2021

GENEVA United Nations independent human rights experts, on Tuesday, called on Iranian authorities to immediately release a political activist, said to be at risk of severe health complications and even death, if not provided with appropriate medical care.
Filmmaker Mohammad Nourizad received multiple sentences in February last year, including a seven-and-a-half-year prison term, after being convicted on charges relating to an open letter he and others signed calling for the Supreme Leader’s resignation and for constitutional changes, according to a news release by the experts.

Madam President, Ladies and Gentlemen,
It is an honour and privilege for me to address the UN Human Rights Council Working Group on the Universal Periodic Review and present the national report of Estonia submitted to the third Universal Periodic Review.
The UPR provides an important and valuable tool for reviewing our national human rights legislation, policies and practices. It helps to make plans for the future as well as to discuss how to further international cooperation in protection and promotion of human rights and fundamental freedoms. We are glad to carry on the UPR dialogue with all UN Member States during this third reporting cycle, which began in 2011 when the first national report was submitted.
One year after: Authorities must comply with Federal High Court decision to release Mubarak Bala on bail
GENEVA (28 April 2021) – UN experts today called on Nigerian authorities to comply with the decision of the Federal High Court to release the prominent humanist and rights defender Mubarak Bala on bail. “Today marks one year since Mr. Bala was arrested and detained in Kano State, without any formal charges, on allegations of blasphemy. His arbitrary detention has continued despite our appeals to the Government in May and July last year,” the human rights experts said. As president of the Humanist Association of Nigeria, Mr. Bala had led human rights education campaigns promoting freedom of religion or belief and worked to raise awareness about religious extremism. His arrest on 28 April 2020 followed a petition filed with Kano police a day earlier alleging that he had insulted the Prophet Muhammad in Facebook posts.

on Tuesday voiced serious concerns over recent appointment
of new members to Nepal’s National Human Rights
Commission, which they said “undermined its independence,
integrity and legitimacy”.
In a statement,
the experts said that the appointment process “failed to
implement the essential requirements of the Paris
Principles, including the need for an open, transparent
and participatory process with broad
consultations”.
“We are deeply concerned that the
appointment process is not in line with international
standards and that it undermines the independence, integrity
and legitimacy of the National Human Rights Commission
(NHRC), which restricts the ability of the people of Nepal

GENEVA (27 April 2021) – UN Human rights experts expressed serious concern for the independence of Nepal s National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) after the recent appointment of new members that they regard as being inconsistent with international standards. The experts urged the Government to rectify the situation immediately. We are deeply concerned that the appointment process is not in line with international standards and that it undermines the independence, integrity and legitimacy of the NHRC, which restricts the ability of the people of Nepal to access appropriate remedies for alleged human rights violations, the experts said. This will have a chilling effect on civil society actors.
