Fears that the programme could be held back heightened when the second batch of doses from the COVID-19 Vaccine Global Access Facility (COVAX) facility, expected from India, were not forthcoming.

Experts for ensuring routine vaccination during pandemic

LAHORE : While immunisation services have started to recover slowly from disruptions caused by Covid-19, millions of children remain vulnerable to deadly diseases in the country, health experts warned on World Immunisation Week, highlighting urgent need for a renewed commitment to improve vaccination access and uptake.
“While we focus on critically important vaccines to protect against Covid-19, there remains a need to ensure routine vaccinations are not missed”, said Dr M Akram Shah, National Programme Manager, Expanded Programme on Immunization (EPI), addressing a webinar here at the University of Health Sciences (UHS).
Ghana is expected to receive another consignment of over 200,000 doses of the Oxford AstraZeneca COVID-19 vaccine in May this year.
The UNICEF’s Regional Advisor for Health Systems Strengthening for Western and Central Africa Regional Office, Ms Susie Villeneuve, disclosed this, explaining that the vaccine would be shipped from the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) to Ghana, Togo and the Comoros.
She said the development was because the DRC did not have the needed systems and structures to use the AstraZeneca doses it received under the global access (COVAX) facility.
