Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) loses Male mayoralty; leaders spar over adopting a parliamentary system

In the last significant national outing, way ahead of the presidential polls of October 2023, the ruling Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) managed to stay ahead of an otherwise demoralised and at times discredited Opposition identified with jailed former President Abdulla Yameen. However, the MDP lost the mayoralty of capital Male, once its popular bastion to the Opposition, to Yameen’s one-time Housing Minister and his Progressive Party of Maldives-People’s National Congress (PPM-PNC) combine’s deputy leader, Dr Mohamed Muizzu. According to official figures, Muizzu polled 61 percent of votes in the lowest-ever 20-percent turnout in the city, which in turn accounts for 40 percent of the nation’s population. The national turnout itself was an equally low 40 percent, half the past figures. Despite claims to the contrary, MDP insiders attributed the less-then robust performance to inner-party rivalry and other inherent deficiencies that had gone unaddressed in the past.

Maldives ruling party wins 43 pct of seats in local council elections - World News

2021-04-26 06:35:50 GMT2021-04-26 14:35:50(Beijing Time) Xinhua English MALE, April 26 (Xinhua) Maldives ruling party Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) has won 43 percent of seats in the recently-held local council elections while the largest opposition party Progressive Party of Maldives (PPM) has won 34.9 percent of seats, local media reported Monday. President of Maldives Elections Commission Ahmed Shareef announced over the weekend that 400 out of the MDP s 804 candidates had secured seats while 325 out of the PPM s 646 candidates had done so. According to Shareef, the ruling MDP had won the majority in 71 islands while PPM won the majority in 64 islands. Meanwhile, smaller parties such as the Jumhoori Party won 23 seats, while the Adhaalath party won 11 seats, and the Maldives Development Alliance won 16 seats. The EC said that 173 out of 600 independent candidates also secured seats.

Officials marking the finger of a voter in Local Council Election 11 April 2021, MVT 14:32 Maldives Saturday voted for the Local Council Elections (LCE) and Women s Development Committee. The election, which was initially slated for 2020 was delayed due to global pandemic COVID-19. Voting kicked off at 0700 hrs and will continue until with over 701 ballots across the country. Due to low voter turn out in the morning, voting was delayed for several centres in the atolls. As per the preliminary results of the elections, the opposition Progressive Party of Maldives (PPM) candidate, former Housing Minister Dr Mohamed Muizzu was elected as the Male City mayor.
