UK, Australia Agree on ‘Vast Majority’ of Free Trade Agreement
The UK and Australia have reached a consensus on the “vast majority” of the elements of a comprehensive free trade agreement, the Department for International Trade said on Friday.
“Both countries are confident that the remaining issues will be resolved, and will now enter a sprint to agree the outstanding details with the aim of reaching agreement in principle by June,” said a joint statement released after two days of talks between UK International Trade Secretary Liz Truss and Australian Trade Minister Dan Tehan in London. With the British economy now well out of Europe, and with the Johnson Government seemingly committed to replacement trade deals in emerging Asia, now is an opportune time to evaluate what trade agreement assets the UK actually has lined up that would compensate for the loss of EU trade.

The United States should rejoin the Comprehensive and Progressive Trans-Pacific Partnership agreement (CPTPP) and work with China to merge the agreement with the Regional Comprehensive Economic Partnership (RCEP) to create a huge free-trade area that would include the two largest economies in the world, according to China s former chief trade negotiator, Long Yongtu.
