RCEP: What does it mean for future Asia-Pacific trade and U S companies operating in the region?

RCEP: What does it mean for future Asia-Pacific trade and U.S. companies operating in the region? After eight years of back-and-forth negotiations, Asia’s Regional Comprehensive Economic Partnership on Trade (RCEP), the world’s largest regional trade agreement, was signed in an online ceremony on 15 November 2020. While more limited than the U.S.-led Trans-Pacific Partnership (TPP-12) and its successor, the Comprehensive and Progressive Trans-Pacific Partnership (CPTPP), it is a major regional free trade agreement that poses challenges for the United States, which opted out of TPP-12 and CPTPP and was not part of RCEP, and could displace some U.S. exports to the region.

He told the participants that Upholding the spirit of nonconflict and nonconfrontation, mutual respect and win-win cooperation, as well as focusing on cooperation and managing differences are the keys to promoting the healthy and stable development of Sino-US relations. This is a promising vision for China-US ties and one that should be embraced by the American side as soon as possible. For that to happen, however, China s counterparts must first overcome some of their domestic difficulties.

An Expanded CPTPP : Could it Help Bridge China-U S Trade Differences?

Hugh StephensDistinguished Fellow, Asia Pacific Foundation of Canada This year Japan assumes the Chairmanship of the Comprehensive and Progressive Trans-Pacific Partnership (CPTPP), and will convene the annual meeting of the Parties, known as the CPTPP Commission. Recall that the CPTPP, the eleven-country agreement that emerged out of the ashes of the Trans-Pacific Partnership (TPP) when the U.S. withdrew after Donald Trump took office, came into effect at the very end of December 2018. Six of the eleven signatories (Australia, Canada, Japan, Mexico, New Zealand, Singapore) fast-tracked their domestic ratification process, allowing the Agreement to come into effect, jump-starting additional tariff reductions that would take effect on January 1, 2019. A seventh member, Vietnam, ratified it a couple of months later, leaving Brunei, Chile, Malaysia and Peru still to complete the ratification process.

McFlock 10.1.1.1.1.1 Well, quadrant is a 2-dimensional division where the X and Y axes go into negatives. Octant applies to the equivalent for a cube. But with a sphere (although technically I saw on QI that the term oblate spheroid is a more precise description of the Earth) the Z axis (depth/altitude) seems less meaningful, and with map geometry we re generally discussing 2d represeantations of a 3d object – the surface, not the full sphere. So I d go with quadrant , except talking about being in 4 hemispheres is more explicit that each axis is considered seperately in the calculation. Totally should get back to work, though lol
