Winter s White Noise

The best way to operate a Wovel - have your daughter use it. Photo: Mitch Teich Jan 16, 2021 Mitch TeichWinter s White Noise It’s snowing pretty heavily outside the First Person International Command Center as I write this.  Maybe it’s snowing pretty heavily where you’re reading it. This is the perfect snowstorm scenario – a weekend, in the midst of a pandemic, before the imminent arrival of our dog.  In other words, we have nowhere to be, and no urgent need to shovel. If there’s anything that harshes the buzz of a good snowstorm, it’s being awakened at 6:45 a.m. by the sound of six of your neighbors, each of whom has already fired up the snowblower. For one thing, they’re never in the same key, and so the result is a gas-powered cacophony that invades your snowy reverie and makes you feel both annoyed and guilty for your laziness.

Inspecting the Premises

An early summer view of the closet recording studio. Since then, the bathrobe has moved to a hook. Photo: Mitch Teich Jan 02, 2021 Our house turns 70 years old this year.  We have occupied it for exactly 1/70 th of its history.  I moved into the house a year ago this week.  (My family got here a few weeks later, but that’s a story for a different column.) We have gotten to know the house pretty well in that year, probably as well as we got to know our house in Wisconsin over the entire time we lived there.  Maybe better, in fact.  When we sold our Midwest bungalow a year ago, the inspection turned up a handful of issues that may or may not have been on the inspection report when we bought the house 14 years before.

North Country Bookmarks: Turning Trauma into Art

Jan 01, 2021 Jessica LawrenceNorth Country Bookmarks: Turning Trauma into Art Mental Health can be a pretty difficult topic of conversation. It’s something I’ve struggled with since I was 15, and I have no shame in admitting that the 300 mgs of Wellbutirin I take daily is what makes me feel a little less stressed - or ready to cry at the drop of a hat. This month s episode features books that cover a variety of potentially triggering topics, including drug abuse and sexual assault, and so sensitive listeners should be advised. That being said, I wanted to bring these authors on to talk about these difficult subjects in an effort to lessen the stigma of Mental Health and caring for ourselves with open and honest discussion.
