New Testing Procedures Become Available: COVID-19 PCPHE Update for February 10, 2021 : The Prowers Journal

  The Prowers County Public Health and Environment Department’s February 10, 2021 report notes 1,153 cumulative COVID-19 cases in the county with 61 hospitalizations and 22 deaths in people who tested positive for COVID-19. The county’s Positivity Rate for the past two weeks averages at 5.53% which is a fractional increase from last week’s rate of 5.31%. The goal is 5% or less. Recently, Prowers County moved from a Blue to a Yellow Level rating which allowed for additional persons for some indoor activities. The county’s seven-day Positivity Rate is 7% with 21 new cases between February 1 st and the 9 th and 41 total cases over the past 14 days.

Expanded COVID-19 Vaccination Clinics Expected for Prowers County : The Prowers Journal

  Prowers County remains at Level Orange-High Risk as of Wednesday, January 20, 2021, one step above the Stay at Home category rated by the Colorado Department of Public Health and Environment. The Positivity Rate for the county has declined from the past week, now at 7.97% compared to 8.37% on January 12 th. The goal is to bring the county to 5% or less. There have been 27 new COVID-19 cases over the past week, from January 13 th to the 19 th. No current outbreaks have been noted. Prowers County now has 1,081 COVID-19 cases with 55 hospitalizations and 22 deaths in people who tested positive for COVID-19. Baca County has listed 248 cases with two deaths; Bent County reports 1,269 cases with 18 deaths; Cheyenne County with 112 cases and five deaths; Crowley County with 1,743 and 14 deaths; Kiowa County has 83 cases and two deaths; Las Animas County reports 882 cases and ten deaths and Otero County reports 1,758 and 56 deaths.   There were 21 candidates on the November 3 rd Colorado ballot for President including a slot for any write-in candidate. The unofficial tally for Colorado is 1,631,018 for Biden and 1,220,661 for the incumbent, Donald Trump. Prowers County residents cast 1,438 ballots for Joe Biden on the Democratic ticket and 3,977 for Trump for the GOP. There was an 81% voter turnout for Prowers County with 5,545 ballots cast from 6,840 eligible voters. Former Colorado Governor John Hickenlooper received 1,565,775 statewide ballots against the incumbent Republican U.S. Senator, Cory Gardner’s 1,280,289. Prowers County residents cast 3,933 for Gardner for a second, four-year term and 1,417 for Hickenlooper. Ken Buck, the republican candidate for the state’s 4th Congressional District, defeated challenger and political newcomer, Ike McCorkle by a vote of 162,263 to 262,621.   Buck also won the county with 3,976 versus the tally for McCorkle at 1,269.

City of Lamar Enacting Safety Measures to Deal with Recent COVID Surge The Prowers County Public Health and Environment department issued a press release on Thursday, October 22nd, stating a death occurred 10/21/2020 associated with COVID-19. The person was a resident of the nursing facility experiencing the outbreak in Lamar. The process of death investigation to determine whether this person died of COVID-19 or with COVID-19 is multi-tiered and goes through local, state and federal agencies. Lamar Mayor, Kirk Crespin, announced on Tuesday, the 20th via facebook that the county is now at risk of going to Stage 3 restrictions unless the outbreak of the pandemic can be brought under control over the next two weeks. Although Crespin said he does not like the idea of mandated mask wearing measures, “We aren’t doing enough on our own,” he stated in light of the recent outbreak of 35 new cases and the death of a resident of Lamar Estates.
