STOCKBRIDGE, MASS .-The Rockwell Center for American Visual Studies, the scholarly arm of Norman Rockwell Museum, announced a slate of speakers and topics for its annual symposium, Picturing Freedom: A Century of Illustration. For the second year in a row this event will happen virtually on Zoom over two days – Friday, January 15 and Saturday, January 16. This timely symposium will explore historical and contemporary notions of freedom as well as the role of illustration as a force in shaping public perception. How has published imagery affected decision-making, public policy, and cultural understanding? Prominent authors, illustrators, and scholars will offer perspectives. Eva Hesse | American artist

Born into a German Jewish family, Hesse was about three years old when her parents left their extended family behind and fled the Nazi regime, arriving in New York City in 1939. Her parents divorced in 1945, and her mother committed suicide a year later. Despite her traumatic and tragic early life, Hesse was an accomplished student. As an adolescent, she already wanted to pursue art, and she attended the School of Industrial Art (now the High School of Art and Design). She went on to study at the Pratt Institute in Brooklyn (from September 1952 to December 1953), Cooper Union (1954–57), and the School of Art and Architecture at Yale University (B.F.A., 1959), where she studied with artist Josef Albers. After she graduated, Hesse returned to New York City and supported her art by working as a pattern designer for a textile company. In 1961 Hesse exhibited her work for the first time in a show titled “Drawings: Three Young Americans” at the John Heller Gallery. She met and marrie

New exhibit to feature international artist at Leesburg Center for the Arts

LEESBURG Internationally renowned artist and designer Michel Bergeron will be featured in a solo exhibit at the Leesburg Center for the Arts that begins Friday and runs through Jan. 29.  “We are very excited to host the Colors in Black & White exhibition,” LCFA director Maria Stefanovic said. “Michel s pieces are both vibrant and bold combinations of pop and abstract art, influenced by fashion consumerism and societal trend shifts. As we begin our journey into 2021, the Renaissance year, visit the Colors in Black & White exhibition and discover, explore and experiment art in the CFA gallery.” Bergeron has been an artist, graphic designer, teacher and inspirer for more than 40 years and has a passion for fine arts.
