The Centre on Friday declared the Smart Cities Awards 2020 in which Indore (Madhya Pradesh) and Surat (Gujarat) won the award jointly for holistic development. In a first, states were also awarded for the overall performance of their smart cities; in this category, Uttar Pradesh emerged on top, followed by Madhya Pradesh and Tamil Nadu.
Indore and Surat were on Friday adjudged joint winners of the Union Housing and Urban Affairs Ministry s Smart Cities Award 2020, while Uttar Pradesh secured the first position in the state awards category, tailed by Madhya Pradesh and Tamil Nadu. The awards were given based on a range of themes like social aspects, governance, culture, urban environment, sanitation, economy, built environment, water and urban mobility. In 2019, Surat was the only winner among smart cities. This is the first time that states have also been awarded for the overall performance of smart cities. The ministry also announced joint winners under the COVID innovation category Kalyan-Dombivali and Varanasi.

The Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs (MoHUA) organised an online event on Friday (25 June) to commemorate six years of the three transformative Urban Missions vis. Smart Cities Mission (SCM), Atal Mission for Urban Rejuvenation and Urban Transformation (AMRUT) and Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana-Urban (PMAY-U), which were launched by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on 25 June 2015.
On this occasion, the Smart City awards results for 2020 were declared. These awards were given across social aspects, governance, culture, urban environment, sanitation, economy, built environment, water, urban mobility. Some interesting themes were added this year for the sustainable business model of ICCC and innovation award, especially in COVID Management.
