NEW DELHI: The Centre on Tuesday informed Rajya Sabha that 9,29,097 Accredited Social Health Activists have been deployed across the country for containing the local transmission of Covid-19.
Under the National Health Mission, ASHAs are envisaged to be community health volunteers and are entitled only to task and activity based incentives, minister of state for health Ashwini Choubey said in a written reply.
In the 2018-19 fiscal, the Union Cabinet revised the amount of incentive for ASHAs from Rs 1,000 to 2,000 per month, he said while elaborating on the measures taken by the government to empower them.
In addition to routine and recurring incentives, many states and union territories also introduced fixed monthly honorarium for ASHAs from their respective budgets, the minister said.

CHENNAI: “Shocked” by the underreporting of doctors’ deaths caused by Covid-19, the Indian Medical Association has urged the Centre to form a high-power committee to study data on doctors who succumbed to the viral infection in the last one year.
While the Centre announced that 162 doctors died of Covid-19, the association has released its database containing names of 744 doctors.
In a letter to minister of state for health and family welfare Ashwini Kumar Choubey, association president Dr J A Jayalal condemned the Centre’s apathy in releasing data and delaying solatium to “martyrs’ families.

The figures are based on the intimations received from the states till January 22.
This was stated by Minister of State for Health Ashwini Kumar Choubey in the House in response to a question on the number of healthcare staff, including doctors, nurses and ASHA workers who have been affected died due to COVID-19.
On whether the data presented by the Indian Medical Association regarding the number of healthcare workers who have died due to COVID-19 has been taken note of by the Ministry and any follow up verification of the same done, Choubey said the process of insurance disbursement has been de-centralized under the Pradhan Mantri Garib Kalyan Package (PMGKP: Insurance Scheme).
