HOUSTON, Texas (KTRK) Last month s winter storm showed how in demand plumbers are and there s a way you can get in on the industry and get paid while doing it.
The Houston Public Works department said a quarter of all neighbors had pipe damage during the freeze, and there s still an issue with fixing people s pipes. Please be patient, said Johnathon Alsobrooks, the owner of Southern Style Plumbing. We re trying to get to everybody as quick as possible.
Alsobrooks is one of many plumbers in the Houston-area trying to help, but he admits it s not easy. It s been very daunting to take on, he said. It s been burdensome, but it s been pleasing to be able to help Houston.

Here are five things happening around your state:
WINTER WEATHER CRIPPLES TEXAS
A large winter system blew through Texas this week dropping 6-8 inches of snow and ice in parts of the state and leaving millions without power for days at a time. Freezing temperatures coupled with water and snow on the roads lead to iced out conditions, impassable roads, and multiple, lasting road closures. These conditions led to a shutdown of most businesses, including the state legislature which cancelled all of the scheduled hearings this week. Those hearings will be rescheduled at a later date. Local officials and power suppliers have been working hard to get Texans’ power back online.

Damage from last month s winter storm was so widespread that Gov. Greg Abbott changed the rules to allow plumbing apprentices to tackle broken pipes and water heaters.
The Texas snow melted weeks ago, but the damage from last month’s winter storm and power outages could take a long time to fix. Part of that comes from overwhelming demand for repair workers. Homeowners, in particular, are scrambling to find plumbers to diagnose leaks, re-pipe houses, and fix busted water heaters. But the state has put new rules in place so more qualified people can join the effort.
