Sony’s PlayStation5 is getting its first major software update on Wednesday, enhancing the console’s storage, personalization and social features.
Sony executive Hideaki Nishino announced the updates in a blog post on Tuesday, saying that the global rollout was “packed with new features and improvements.” Notably, the update will expand the PS5’s storage and management capabilities, allowing gamers to transfer PS5 games from the console’s internal storage to an external USB drive.
“It’s a great way to extend the storage capabilities of your PS5 console, and you can seamlessly copy your PS5 games back to the console’s internal storage when you’re ready to play,” Nishino said, adding that the titles cannot be played from the external USB storage.

Storage space is going to be less of a concern for PS5 owners, especially for fans of graphically-demanding and performance-intensive games.
According to the PlayStation Blog, Sony s next-gen console will be rolling out its first major software update in all regions tomorrow on April 14, 2021, which is set to carry new storage options and social features in tow.
For starters, accessing the game s thumbnail from the home menu via the options button will bring up the option to transfer PS5 games to select external USB drives from the internal SSD, or the vice versa.
The titles cannot be played directly from the USB system, but doing so would provide users with a temporary space-saving measure that lets them remove and add content from the drive much faster than downloading it from scratch.

You won t be able to play the game from the drive but rather just use it for archival. If you need the game in the future, it s much faster to just transfer it from the drive than download it all over again, the report said on Tuesday. This feature has been available on the PS4 consoles for a while now and they could even run the game directly off the external drive. Even the PS5 allowed transferring and playing PS4 titles from external drives.
