Kroger is pulling up stakes in Nokomis, leaving the Montgomery County community without a grocery store.
Kroger s Central Division informed store management and city officials of the decision in a letter last week.
The decision followed extensive evaluation of the store’s financial performance, the letter stated. Company analysts report the store has not operated profitably for several years and their research indicates a turnaround is not realistic.
The store at 415 N. Spruce St. has been in operation for 44 years and currently employs 28 people.
The letter indicated that the store would be closing by the first week of February, but Eric Halvorson, Manager of Corporate Affairs based in Indianapolis, reached Wednesday, said the date of the closing could be influenced by the availability of products in the waning days of service there.
