Bitcoin rallied back to the $40 000 level as cryptocurrencies recover some of the ground lost in this monthâs volatile rout.
The largest digital token climbed as high as $40 866 before trimming some of the gain to $39 600 as of 7:08 a.m. in New York. The Bloomberg Galaxy Crypto Index advanced 9% as rivals like Ether also climbed. The gauge had one of its worst stretches ever last week.

Bitcoin trimmed gains Tuesday after Elon Muskâs effort to bolster the tokenâs green credentials stoked a rally, extending a bout of marked volatility in the wake of last weekâs crypto rout.
The largest digital currency fell as much as 3% to dip briefly below $38 000 in Asian trading, following a 16% overnight jump. The wider Bloomberg Galaxy Crypto Index fell 2% as tokens including Ether slipped back too.
