Connecting people with services

Getting health and social services connected to those who need them is the goal of Montana Connect — a web-based referral service that serves Jefferson County. Service providers can range from behavioral health to church food and diaper pantries, according to Connect Coordinator Julie Bir with the Lewis and Clark Public Health Department.  Bir recently met with Jefferson County providers about how the service works.  The service allows a trusted provider to access other services a client may need, make a direct referral and then track the referral to follow the outcome, said Bir.  With Connect, providers can search for additional resources by location, type of service and insurance — both locally and throughout the state, said Bir.

Non-public and homeschools receive second COVID-19 Federal Fund Boost

HELENA, Mont. – As a result of the American Rescue Plan Act (ARPA), signed by the president on March 11, $12.8 million will be flowing to Montana non-public schools and homeschools through the Office of Public Instruction (OPI). This will be the second allotment of funds given to the program after Montana was allocated $12.8 million from the Federal Emergency Assistance to the Non-Public Schools Program (EANS) in January 2021.  The OPI said in a release, the purpose of these federal funds is to provide services and assistance to non-public schools and Montana home school student populations that enroll a significant percentage of low-income students and are most impacted by COVID-19.

Students with Special Needs Equal Opportunity Act heading to Senate

HELENA, Mont. - A house bill has been introduced to the legislative session to help special needs students in Montana rebound from COVID-19 learning loss. A release from Majority Leader of the Montana House of Representatives, Sue Vinton (R-Lockwood) says House Bill 329, the Students with Special Needs Equal Opportunity Act, gives parents the flexibility to support the unique educational needs of their child without increasing state spending. The bill was supported in the House and is on its way to the Senate. According to Vintion’s release, HB 329 allows parents with eligible students under the Federal Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA) to access a reimbursement account within the Montana Office of Public Instruction (OPI) for eligible educational expenses.
