Montana-Designed Satellite Is Launched
Almost all the space excitement this week has been on Mars, where the latest NASA rover, Perseverance, landed and started sending back incredible views, such as video of its landing - a film first.
I say almost, because a resupply launch to the International Space Station (ISS) Saturday, February 20, carried a little satellite designed and constructed by a team at Montana State University in Bozeman. A Northrop Grumman Cygnus resupply spacecraft lifted off from NASA s Wallops Flight Facility in Virginia and less than two hours later docked at the space station.
The IT-SPINS satellite will stay at the orbiting space station until spring, when it will orbit on its own and measure the outer edges of Earth s atmosphere, as it goes around the planet 14 times a day. She fought a valiant fight against cancer and advocated for HPV testing and vaccination to help young people avoid spreading the virus that can lead to cervical cancer.
Lorna was born June 27, 1970 in Glasgow, Montana, the daughter of John A. and Ella Mae (Heser) Stolen. She was welcomed by three sisters, Lee Ann, Torri, and Jerra. The family lived on a farm south of Wolf Point, and she received her early education at Frontier Elementary and Wolf Point High School, graduating in 1988. She began her college program in North Dakota and transferred to Montana State University in Bozeman where she received a Bachelor of Science degree in agriculture degree in 1992. Longtime Jackson resident John Kiefling died Jan. 10 at home in Jackson with his wife, Loyola, by his side. His family provided the following.
John William Kiefling was born Dec. 31, 1938, in Sheridan. John, an only child, enjoyed his childhood participating in many sports and activities with his good buddies. He especially enjoyed hanging out with the cowboy wranglers on the Kendrick Cattle Ranch in northern Wyoming when he was younger. His father, George Kiefling, an engineer for the Burlington Northern Railroad, and mother, Louise Kiefling, a homemaker, predeceased him and always supported his endeavors.
John graduated from Sheridan High School in May 1956. While in high school he so wanted to play football for the Sheridan Broncs but was deemed too small. Not being able to join the football team, he went on to be the high school yearbook photographer. This instilled his lifelong love of photography.
