By Nicole Rolf and Rachel Cone, Montana Farm Bureau Federation The deadline to transmit fiscal bills to the second chamber in the 2021 Montana Legislative Session arrived this week. We didn’t see a lot of floor action on some of our agriculture-specific bills in either chamber, as legislators were hard at work focused on handling the fiscal bills well. We did see progress on some important fiscal bills. House Bill 2: the General Appropriations Act has been passed through both chambers. This is the state’s budget that funds many of the programs and agencies important to us, and the completion of this bill often signals a race to the session’s finish line.

Montana Passes Bill Advancing Hemp Seed as Animal Feed Wednesday, 14 April 2021 Montana Gov. Greg Gianforte signed a bill April 11 authorizing hemp food ingredients to be marketed as commercial feed. HB 396 could be a significant step forward in opening markets for the developing American hemp grain industry. Key features of the bill include: • Clarifies hemp seed food ingredients and substances derived from hemp are included in the definition of commercial feed. • Provides authority for hemp for use as commercial feed for pets and horses. • Includes feed use with other livestock, effectiveness contingent upon FDA-DVM approval of hemp as an approved additive or defined ingredient in animal food or medicated feed for livestock.

GREAT FALLS, Mont. - The Farmers to Families Food Box program could make a comeback, providing for Montanans once again this summer. Last season was successful, now the USDA is considering some possible changes to the program. Cascade, Gallatin, Missoula, and Yellowstone counties were hubs for sending over 6,000 families home with boxes full of fresh food from June to early September 2020. Many of the communities already have food hubs but if you don t have a food hub program you should be working with your neighbors to create one so you can get food to your local community,” Walter Schweitzer, President of the Montana Farmers Union said.
