Degree-holders labour at Malagund gram panchayat in Hanagal taluk of Haveri district
HAVERI: The Covid-19 crisis has made many graduates and postgraduates jobless. The situation is getting from bad to worse, as several PhD holders are enrolling for work under the Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Scheme (MGNREGS) in Hanagal taluk, to make ends meet. Eight graduates, 12 postgraduates, and four PhD-holders are involved in this scheme, and belong to the same village.
The tough rules imposed by the government after a surge in Covid-19 cases in the second wave has left several people, who had migrated to different states, unemployed, forcing them to work under MGNREGS, officials said. Many with MSc, MA, MCom, BA, BCom, BEd degreees and PhDs have been working as labourers under this scheme for a week.
