Jharkhand will contribute its own money to buttress its rural job scheme workers’ wages, chief minister Hemant Soren has announced, prompting renewed calls for the Centre to raise the wages under the programme.
Wages under the Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Act are fixed separately for every state and paid by the Centre, which has been accused of keeping the wages low.
In half the states including Jharkhand, the MGNREGA wage is lower than the minimum wage fixed by the states themselves. Jharkhand is the fourth state to decide to narrow the gap by paying out of its own pocket.

The Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Act tracker released by the People’s Action for Employment Guarantee as well as a research report presented by LibTech India reveal why the rural job programme has not been able to cater to the needs of the poorest during this steep rural job crisis.
Earlier, a survey by the Azim Premji University had shown that 6 out of 10 rural workers had lost their jobs during the lockdown. The Centre for Monitoring Indian Economy also stated that about 1.1 crore daily wage workers were unemployed. Corroborating these claims, the Right to Food Campaign survey has shown that about 43 per cent of its respondents had no work in the month of April and May and that 62 per cent of the workers are now earning considerably less than pre-Covid times. These are adequate evidence of the crisis of employment in India during and after the lockdown.

Ranchi, Dec 29 : Jharkhand Chief Minister Hemant Soren completed one year in office on Tuesday.
On the occasion, a grand programme was organised at Morabadi ground in Ranchi where the Chief Minister inaugurated 171 schemes worth Rs 1,710.26 crore and laid the foundation stone of 59 schemes costing Rs 1,529.06 crore.
Addressing the people he said, When I took charge of the state, the coffers of the state were empty. Each department was reeling under debt. There was an issue about paying salaries to the government employees. I promise that the state will not have to seek help from anyone in the next five years. There will be no need to beg from the Central government and the World Bank.

A 28-year-old man in Rajasthan’s Jhalawar district was beaten up and paraded naked for allegedly sexually harassing a woman, PTI reported on Monday. The accused also filmed the incident and circulated the video on social media.
The incident took place in the city’s Bagher village. Rakesh Rathore, the supervisor of a Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Act project, on Saturday allegedly entered the house of a woman who works under the same jobs scheme. He was later caught by her husband.
The woman’s husband gave Rathore a warning and let him go. However, a day later, some of his friends thrashed Rathore, garlanded him with shoes and paraded him naked.
