MUMBAI: Maharashtra Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray has written a letter to the Centre, urging to consider the COVID-19 pandemic as natural calamity, so that the government can use the state disaster response fund (SDRF) to provide financial assistance to the affected people.
All State Disaster Management Acts have been formed as part of the central disaster management law; hence the state needs the Union government s permission to use the SDRF for helping the pandemic-hit people, a government official said on Thursday.

New Delhi: Maharashtra Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray has written a letter to Prime Minister Narendra Modi suggesting measures to be undertaken to provide immediate relief to the people as the state has imposed COVID-19 restrictions due to a rise in the number of active cases.
Coronavirus: Neighbouring states unable to supply oxygen to Maharashtra, says health minister
A day earlier, Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray had sought the Air Force’s help to tackle an oxygen supply shortage.
Maharashtra Health Minister Rajesh Tope on Wednesday said that the state government had approached its neighbouring states for medical oxygen supply, but they were not able to help because of its increased demand, PTI reported.
“We have approached all the neighbouring states like Chhattisgarh, Madhya Pradesh and Gujarat to supply oxygen for medical purpose, but owing to their own rising demand, these states have expressed their inability to supply oxygen,” Tope told reporters in Mumbai. “Hence, Maharashtra needs to reduce its wastage and work on fixing its leakages [wherever found].”
