MUMBAI: The MSEDCL on Wednesday announced its bill arrears had mounted to Rs 63,740 crore and officials will now disconnect power supply of consumers who fail to clear pending electricity dues, especially for the Lockdown months.
Citizens had protested and many had not paid their electricity bills after receiving hefty bills between April and June, 2020. Some got bills as high as Rs 40,000 to Rs 60,000.
“We had given a lot of options to consumers paying in instalments, waiver of the penalty for delayed payment and also rebate for one-time payment of bills. As per directions of power minister Nitin Raut, we did not disconnect a single connection till December 31. But now it’s time to be stringent and demand pending dues,” said an official. Of the total arrears which need to be recovered, the agricultural consumers have to pay Rs 45,498 crore, an official said. If you are yet to pay your inflated electricity bills or arrears for the power consumption during the lockdown and hoping for some leeway, then you are likely to be in for a shock.
The Maharashtra State Electricity Distribution Company Limited(
MSEDCL) has directed all the regional offices to recover the arrears and immediately cut off
power supply if the payments are made. At the end of December 2020, the state has a total due pending of Rs 63,740 crore, which has worsened the financial condition of MSEDCL. Now, if the customer does not pay the electricity bill, MSEDCL will have no choice but to cut off the power supply, said the order.

The nationwide vaccination campaign launched Saturday, the largest such exercise in the world, has started setting new benchmarks, with vaccines administered to 2,24,301 beneficiaries in the first two days.
“India has vaccinated the highest number of persons on Day1 under its COVID19 vaccination program, the world’s largest such exercise. This is much higher than many other countries such as USA, the UK and France,” a health ministry release said on Sunday evening.
