Chinese hackers attempt to block power supply in Telangana; bid to attack TS Transco, TS Gen thwarted

Chinese hackers’ groups allegedly targeted Telangana State Load Dispatch Centre (TSLDC). (Representational photo - Pixabay)  Hyderabad: A massive Mumbai-type power outage was averted in Telangana after the Central Electricity Authority alerted the Telangana government that the Computer Emergency Response Team of India (CERT-In) has suspected that Chinese hackers may target TS Transco and TS Genco. According to ToI report, Chinese hackers’ groups allegedly targeted Telangana State Load Dispatch Centre (TSLDC), however, the cyber attack was successfully thwarted by the state government agencies. On receiving information from a trusted source about a China-based groups command and control servers trying to communicate with systems belonging to the TSLDC, TS Transco and TS Genco were alerted and asked to take adequate measures.

The minister made the announcement in the state assembly after the issue was raised by opposition members. BJP leader Sudhir Mungantiwar targeted the Maharashtra government, suggesting it was not serious about the issue.

Union Minister RK Singh on Mumbai 2020 Blackout: Human Error Not Chinese Cyberattack

New Delhi: Union Power Minister RK Singh on Tuesday said that the Mumbai power outage last October was caused by human error and there is no evidence to prove that it was triggered due to a cyberattack by China. Speaking to ANI, Mr Singh said, Two teams investigated the power outage and reported that the outage was caused by human error and not due to cyberattack. One of the teams submitted that cyberattacks did happen but they were not linked to the Mumbai grid failure, The cyberattacks happened on our northern and southern region load dispatch centres. However, the malware could not reach our operating system. Maharashtra Home Minister has informed that cyberattacks happened on their Supervisory Control And Data Acquisition (SCADA) system in Mumbai, the minister added.
