Mumbai: Maharashtra Home Minister Anil Deshmukh, on Monday, clarified that the state government was probing the BJP IT cell and not the tweets by Bharat Ratnas Sachin Tendulkar and Lata Mangeshkar. I had said that we will be probing the IT cell of the BJP. But my comments were misconstrued as probe into celebrity tweets. Lata Mangeshkar is like our God, Sachin Tendulkar is idolised by everyone in the country. We want to probe the IT cell of the BJP, and if they had handed over any script. And preliminary inquiry points towards the head of BJP IT cell and 12 influencers, Deshmukh said while issuing a clarification on the matter.

After the Delhi violence, Maharashtra Home Minister Anil Deshmukh has taken a U-turn in the controversy with respect to tweets by celebrities like Lata Mangeshkar and Sachin Tendulkar. Deshmukh on Monday clarified that the state government was probing the BJP IT cell and that his words had been misinterpreted earlier. Lata Mangeshkar is like God to us, Sachin is held in high regard by the whole country, the inquiry was never against them, it was against the BJP IT cell, he said.

Maharashtra Home Minister Anil Deshmukh on Monday said that a preliminary police investigation by has revealed the role of a Bharatiya Janata Party Information Technology cell head and 12 other influencers in an inquiry related to Indian celebrities tweeting in support of the Centre’s handling of the farmers’ protests.
The home minister also clarified that he had not ordered an inquiry into the tweets of celebrities such as singer Lata Mangeshkar and cricketer Sachin Tendulkar. “My statement regarding celebrity tweets on the issue of farmers’ protest has been twisted,” Deshmukh said. “I had ordered an inquiry into the BJP’s IT cell as it was likely to be involved in the case and not celebrities.”
